In-Home Physical Therapy After Surgery in Naples: What to Expect

Preparing for recovery after knee, hip, shoulder, or another orthopedic surgery? Mobile physical therapy—also called in-home physical therapy—can bring individualized rehabilitation to your living space when it is appropriate for your procedure and surgeon’s instructions. Your first weeks may involve movement precautions, fatigue, and questions about safe daily activity.

Start with your surgeon’s plan

No two surgeries or rehabilitation protocols are identical. Before your first visit, gather your discharge instructions, weight-bearing status, movement restrictions, prescribed exercises, and follow-up schedule. If something is unclear, your treating physical therapist should coordinate with your surgical team rather than assume that a generic protocol applies.

Recovery planning should reflect the procedure performed, healing stage, other health concerns, your home setup, and the activities that matter most to you.

What happens during an in-home evaluation?

A physical therapist may review your goals, symptoms, post-operative precautions, strength, range of motion, walking, transfers, and how you navigate your home. The visit can include observing practical tasks such as getting out of a chair, negotiating a step, entering the shower, or using a walker safely.

These real-life observations help identify barriers that are easy to overlook in a clinic. A plan should be tailored to your needs, not simply a printed collection of exercises.

What treatment may look like

Depending on the procedure and your surgeon’s instructions, sessions may emphasize safe gait and mobility, progressively appropriate exercises, education on swelling and symptom management, functional strength, balance, and strategies for household activities. Skilled hands-on techniques may be appropriate when clinically indicated and safe for your healing tissues.

Your physical therapist may reassess progress over time and adjust activities based on your response. More exercise is not always better; dosage and timing matter.

Why the home environment matters

Home-based care can reduce the need to travel while mobility is limited. It also allows the therapist to work with your actual stairs, bed height, flooring, bathroom arrangement, and daily routine. This may be especially valuable early in recovery or when getting to a clinic is difficult.

However, some people require hospital-based services, home-health services, specialized equipment, or a higher level of monitoring. Others benefit from transitioning to an outpatient setting as recovery progresses. The right plan depends on clinical needs and safety, not convenience alone.

Know when to contact your care team

Follow your surgeon’s specific wound-care and activity instructions. Contact the surgical team promptly about concerning changes such as worsening wound drainage, fever, or unexpected swelling or pain. Seek urgent medical attention for new chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, or other emergency symptoms.

If you’re unsure whether you are ready to start or advance activity, ask your surgeon and physical therapist rather than pushing through concerning symptoms.

Questions to discuss with your physical therapist

Do I need to wait until my pain is gone? Not necessarily; timing depends on the procedure and medical instructions. Ask your surgical team when to begin and what level of activity is appropriate.

Will I need to go to a clinic later? Possibly. Your therapy setting may change as your strength, independence, or equipment needs evolve.
